Additional information regarding sample selection. | The institutions included in the study are selected from a sampling strategy according to the institution type and size (maison centrale [long-term detention facility]; centre de détention [intermediate detention facility]; maison d'arrêt [short-term detention facility]), while also specifying the number of interviews per institution. The survey is offered to all first-time offenders by the reception staff upon entering the facility; the interview is then scheduled the following week if accepted. |
Database objective | |
Main objective |
Detailed description of this specific prison population and comparison with prevalent prison population (sub-sample of cross-sectional maisons d'arrêt survey); outcome of disorders at 1 month and qualitative analysis at 9 months.
(Initial aim: to determine specific factors for mental health deterioration in the short term. Aim is not achievable given the small number of individuals still present at the institution 9 months after their arrival). |

Procedures | |
Data collection method | Two clinicians (a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist) interviewed the individuals together. The psychologist conducted a structured interview in line with MINI (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview) guidelines. The psychiatrist then carried out an open interview with the prisoner (personal, family and legal history prior to incarceration). Each clinician independently gave one (or several) diagnosis/diagnoses (MINI- and clinically-generated); finally they met and concluded with a consensus list of one (or several) diagnosis/diagnoses. They also separately and then together assessed the severity of the individual's condition (CGI severity scale) and his history. |
