Who initiated the “Epidemiology – France” portal?

The “Epidemiology – France” portal is the result of a joint project involving Inserm – Institut thématique Santé Publique (ISP), the Direction Générale de la Compétitivité de l’Industrie et des Services (DGCIS – French government department for the competitiveness of industry and services) of the French Ministry of the Economy and Leem (Les Entreprises du Médicament – French pharmaceutical industry association).

ISP has been in charge of designing and setting up the website and is now responsible for its administration and future development within the broader context of the Alliance nationale pour les sciences de la vie et de la santé (Aviesan – French National Alliance for Life and Health Sciences). Alongside Inserm, the DGCIS and Leem co-funded all the operations necessary to construct the site and were part of the project’s steering committee.

This tripartite partnership was operated under the auspices of the Conseil Stratégique des Industries de Santé (CSIS - Strategic Council for the Health Industries). This CSIS is a consultation body set up in 2004. It brings together the Public Authorities and health industry executives in France and is chaired by the Prime Minister.

In the context of measure 10 adopted following the fourth meeting of the CSIS, on October 26, 2009, “Develop epidemiology in France”, the CSIS recommended 5 priority actions, including “the creation of a portal describing the content of existing private and public health databases and cohorts, in compliance with the legislation and regulations in force”.
