Additional information regarding sample selection. The recruited patients are selected by their general practitioners participating in the study. The sample of physicians was established by random selection from the exhaustive list of the contact information of independent general practitioners practicing in 2004 in Paris and in the departments adjacent to it

Main objective To analyse social inequalities in preventive practices in general medicine.
Inclusion criteria - hommes entre 35 et 64 ans pour la consommation de tabac et d’alcool
- femmes entre 50 et 69 ans pour le dépistage des cancers gynécologiques

Details of collected declarative data The social and medical characteristics were collected bilaterally (mirror questionnaires) from patients by telephone (for the social characteristics) and from physicians by questions asked face-to-face by physician surveyors previously trained in administering the questionnaires. The physicians were interviewed in their offices and responded for each patient with the aid of their medical files.
