Additional information regarding sample selection. The first three groups included :1) 80 miners with a moderate level of exposure to coal mine dust, normal chest radiography (00)2) 80 miners with a high level of exposure and a normal radiography3) 80 coal miners with a high level of exposure and an anormal radiography (57 with a 01 radio and 23 with a 10 radio). These three groups of miners were matched for age and tobacco. The fourth group of 20 coal miners with a pneumoconiosis (11 radio or more) was included at the second survey.
Database objective
Main objective The study of Lorraine Miners was set up in 1990 with 2 main objectives.
- To estimate the predictive value of chest tomodensitometry and of sensitive functional tests in the development of peumoconioses.
- To test specific hypotheses about the physiology of emphysema and fibrosis using biological markers: proteases/antiproteases, oxidative/antioxidative and degradation/repair balances.
The study of genetics has subsequently been developped.
