Additional information regarding sample selection. All persons admitted to the aforementioned hospital emergency departments for dog bites between May 2009 and June 2010.
Database objective
Main objective The aim of the severity study is to provide an epidemiological description of bites, bitten individuals and the dog that bit them; to determine dog bite severity factors from data collected at the emergency departments (victim age and gender, dog characteristics, connection between victim and dog, etc.); and data collected on the development and impact of the bite at one month. The study may also help chart aggression in dogs who bite, describe encountered behaviour sequences and to establish a bite risk level. Finally, the sequelae study may help describe sequelae number and type, as well as disabilities caused by dog bites, 16 months after the incident.
Inclusion criteria All patients treated in emergency departments or by SAMU/SMUR (emergency medical services) in participating hospitals are included in the severity study; following the dog bite or for initial treatment, regardless of the age and type of bite (attack, work-related accident, etc.), or whether the skin is broken or not. All patients that agreed to participate in the in first study on dog bite severity factors are included in the sequelae study. Patients that did not give signed consent for the first study will not be included.
