Additional information regarding sample selection. In 2013, the OVE Council stated its desire to produce pertinent data on both a national and a more local level. In order to do so, the sampling rate was reviewed as follows, standardised based on the size of the institution or the university sector, regardless of the type of institution or sector: 1/12th of the students enrolled in an institution or a university sector with 6,000 students or more; 1/10th of the students enrolled in an institution or university sector with between 3,000 and 5,999 students; 1/10th of STS and CPGE classes; 1/6th of the students enrolled in an institution or university sector with between 1,000 and 2,999 students; 1/3 of students enrolled in an institution or university sector with between 0 and 999 students.
Database objective
Main objective This survey device was proven to be necessary following OVE missions for several reasons:

The lifestyles of students are very different from one another, and the development of higher learning tends to accentuate diversity and to increase differences.

The statistical survey by questionnaire, representative of the entire student population, allows for the making of an inventory of this diversity and to give a complete description.

In order to clarify the relationships between lifestyles and curricula, it must combine observation of all major aspects of material life (resources, housing, etc.), the structure of time usage, organisation and the course of study (type of degree obtained, academic and social situation over the course of the year prior to the survey, etc.).

In order to monitor the evolution of living conditions and paths, this survey must be repeated regularly.

Lastly, in order to allow for the comparison between European countries, the CdV [Living Conditions] survey is recorded in the Eurostudent programme for European comparative data.
