Additional information regarding sample selection. Selection of the nursing home: Information on the study and an invitation to participate was sent by post to all eligible nursing home coordinating geriatricians and in duplicate to the manager of the nursing home.

Selection of patients: Each participating nursing home coordinating geriatrician was expected to include the last 8 patients (after study materials reception date) entering or leaving the nursing home (either temporarily or definitively, excluding death) in the last 3 months.
Database objective
Main objective To describe the population of nursing home residents in France and in particular to quantify transitions into or out of the nursing home and to describe the characteristics of the nursing home residents at admission and discharge.
Inclusion criteria To be eligible, the residents had to have been admitted to the nursing home for the first time (from home, hospital or another nursing home) or following a hospitalization, or had to have been temporarily or permanently discharged from the nursing home (to home, hospital or another nursing home) in the previous three months.

Data collection method The data will be collected using 2 paper questionnaires completed by the physician. The purpose of the nursing home questionnaire will be to provide data on transitions into or out of the nursing home and on the organization of the nursing home. The aim of the resident questionnaires was to describe individual residents moving into or out of the nursing home.
