New results for the 2015 survey NOYADES: still a significant number of accidental drownings

26 August 2015

The french Health Monitoring Institute (InVS), as part of the investigation NOYADES 2015, has identified since June 1, 761 accidental drownings, 261 of which caused death. These drownings are related to good weather this summer, prompting for swimming. Prevention remains the best protection against this risk, which is why the National Prevention and Health Education Institute (INPES) recalls the precautions to take to swim safely.

The survey NOYADES 2015 was launched in May 2015. It is organized by the french Institute of Health Surveillance (InVS) and the french National Prevention and Health Education Institute (INPES), with support from the french Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Sports. Data collection is performed by SEPIA-Health. The survey identifies all drownings in France (DOM-TOM included) between 1 June and 30 September 2015 that needed a rescue intervention and have been followed by hospitalization or death. Data collection is performed by the aid involved locally: firefighters Samu-Smur, gendarmerie, police, French Red Cross, CRS, lifeguards, etc.
