Additional information regarding sample selection. All cases of drowning or near drowning followed by hospitalisation that required rescue organisation intervention in France during the summer period (01 June to 30 September during the survey year).
Database objective
Main objective - To identify the number of drownings that required hospitalisation or resulted in death, according to the location and drowning circumstances (accidental, suicide, assault);
- To describe characteristics of the victims;
- To record the drowning severity (drowning stage) and outcome for victims;
- To describe the activities and circumstances when drowning occurred;
- To study the trends in accidental drownings in relation to previous years;
- "To provide qualitative elements of evaluation of the efficiency of safety devices of private swimming pool.
Inclusion criteria All recorded cases of drowning, followed by hospitalisation or death occurring throughout the French territory (mainland and départements, regions and overseas communities) that required intervention by rescue organisations.

Data collection method Questionnaires should be completed on the same day that drowning occurred by the response team for the drowned person. Questionnaires should be recorded directly online, or sent by post or fax within three days following the drowning.

Details on monitoring of participants The outcome of non-deceased victims at the drowning site is researched by hospital departments (hospital death, presence or absence of sequelae) within 30 days following the drowning.
